From Brief to Build: How We Approach Commercial Projects at Object Atelier
At Object Atelier, we approach each commercial project with a genuine desire to understand our clients' needs, create spaces that feel right, and craft environments that truly serve their purpose. Our approach is grounded in simplicity, functionality, and a deep respect for the people who will inhabit these spaces. We believe in creating designs that enhance wellbeing and productivity, and we strive to do this in a thoughtful, considerate way.
This is how we bring our projects from brief to build:
Understanding the Brief: Listening First
The foundation of any good project lies in understanding the needs of the client. We take the time to listen - really listen - to our clients’ vision, objectives, and challenges. Our goal is not only to understand the space’s requirements but to also appreciate the culture, values, and dynamics of the team that will use it.
Our founders, George Harding and Simon White, are personally involved in the early stages of each project. Both work directly with our clients, something our clients truly value. Their hands-on approach helps us establish a strong rapport and ensures that the design process begins with a deep understanding of the client’s needs (Brown, 2021). By getting to know our clients personally, we’re able to tailor our designs to reflect their unique vision and company culture.
Conceptual Design: Simple Ideas, Thoughtful Execution
Once we have a clear understanding of the brief, we begin the conceptual design phase. Here, we balance creativity with practicality. We strive for simple, elegant solutions that make the most of the space while also addressing specific functional needs. Our furniture design philosophy embraces the Scandinavian ethos of clean lines, natural materials, and a focus on light and space, ensuring every choice serves both aesthetic and practical purposes (Smith, 2020).
The collaborative process with the clients allows for open feedback and ensures that everyone is aligned before we proceed with creating the furniture.
Planning and Budgeting
Once the design is agreed upon, we move into planning and budgeting. At Object Atelier, we believe in transparency. We work closely with our clients to establish realistic expectations about costs, timelines, and potential challenges. We aim to provide a seamless, worry-free experience by ensuring that every detail, from materials to construction logistics, is thoughtfully planned and budgeted (Jones, 2019).
Our founders, George and Simon, continue to stay closely involved throughout this phase. They provide personal oversight, ensuring that all aspects of the project remain aligned with the client’s vision while also keeping the project on track financially.
Construction: Bringing the Vision to Life
Construction is where ideas transform into reality. We collaborate with trusted builders, contractors, and specialists who share our commitment to quality and attention to detail. Throughout this phase, we remain actively involved, ensuring that every element of the design is executed faithfully (Miller, 2018).
With regular site visits and ongoing communication with the construction team, we closely monitor progress and address any challenges that arise promptly. Our goal is to foster an environment of calm efficiency, where everyone involved is working towards a shared vision.
5. Final Touches and Handover: A Space that Feels Right
As the construction nears completion, we begin adding the finishing touches. These final details — from selecting the perfect pieces of bespoke furniture to choosing complementary lighting and accessories — transform the space from a design concept into a lived experience. Each piece is carefully chosen to enhance both the aesthetic and functionality of the space, aligning with the overall design vision.
Before we officially hand over the project, we conduct a final walk-through with our clients to ensure that everything is in place and that the space feels just as it should - whether that’s inviting, productive, or calming. Our clients truly appreciate the personal attention to detail, with both George and Simon directly overseeing these final touches to ensure everything is perfect.
6. Post-Completion: Lasting Support
At Object Atelier, we understand that our relationship with our clients doesn’t end when the project is completed. We offer ongoing support, ensuring that the space continues to meet the client’s evolving needs. Whether it’s dealing with maintenance, making adjustments, or providing advice on future changes, we remain available to help our clients get the most out of their space (Jones, 2019).
A Thoughtful, Humble Approach
At the heart of our approach is a deep commitment to understanding, creating, and delivering. We’re not just designing spaces; we’re crafting environments that enhance the experiences of the people who will use them. By working closely with our clients, and having George and Simon directly involved in each project, we ensure that the final result is more than just a space—it’s a place that reflects your values and meets your needs.
Whether you’re looking to redesign your office, create a more functional retail space, or design an inviting hospitality environment, we’re here to collaborate with you every step of the way.
