Case Study: Chelsea Flower Show 2020 Garden by Object Atelier
Project: RHS Chelsea Flower Show
Project Scope: bespoke seating, structural elements, and design elements crafted from locally sourced English Sweet Chestnut
In 2020, Object Atelier had the distinct honor of collaborating with Hardys Cottage Garden Plants and the renowned horticulturalist Rosy Hardy on a unique design for the Chelsea Flower Show. Though the show itself was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rosy Hardy was determined to bring her beautiful, bespoke garden design to life, ensuring that the project would still have a lasting impact. The display was instead unveiled at Hardys Cottage Garden Plants' nursery, with a special opening led by Adam Frost, a celebrated horticulturalist and television presenter.
Our role in this prestigious project was to create bespoke outdoor seating, structural design elements, and other key features that complemented the garden's aesthetic. The emphasis was placed on combining functionality with natural beauty, using sustainably sourced materials that would stand the test of time in both form and durability.
Project Highlights and Scope of Work
Bespoke Garden Seating
Object Atelier designed and handcrafted custom seating to enhance the visitor experience at the Chelsea Flower Show garden commissioned by Hardys Cottage Garden Plants. Made from sustainably sourced English Sweet Chestnut, the seating blended seamlessly into the natural surroundings, offering a warm, tactile connection to the landscape.
Architectural Garden Structures
To add structure and dimension, we created architectural elements that framed the garden and acted as both functional supports and sculptural focal points. These bespoke features were designed to complement the planting scheme and enhance the flow and depth of the space.
Custom-Made Joinery Features
Additional custom-crafted features brought texture and character to the garden, aligning with the naturalistic design and enhancing the atmosphere for visitors. Every piece was designed to integrate harmoniously with the garden's aesthetic, while remaining practical for everyday use.
Materials and Craftsmanship
We selected English Sweet Chestnut for its eco-friendly credentials, natural durability, and warm, rustic finish. This locally sourced timber was pivotal in achieving a sustainable design that aligned with the values of both Object Atelier and the client. Each element was meticulously handcrafted to withstand outdoor conditions while maintaining its beauty over time.
Design Collaboration and Inspiration
Working in close collaboration with renowned horticulturist Rosy Hardy, we developed joinery that enhanced the garden’s visual language. Our shared commitment to bespoke craftsmanship and nature-inspired design helped bring the vision to life. Although the Chelsea Flower Show 2020 was cancelled, the garden was unveiled at Hardys Cottage Garden Plants’ nursery and officially opened by Adam Frost, drawing praise and recognition.
Project Outcome
The final result was a bespoke garden installation combining traditional woodworking with contemporary garden design. Our custom joinery added function, form, and elegance - creating a tranquil space that encouraged connection with nature. The project demonstrated Object Atelier’s ability to deliver handcrafted, sustainable pieces that elevate outdoor environments.
A Special Thank You to Rosy Hardy
